When to do a Food Allergy Test on Your Baby

When to do a Food Allergy Test on Your Baby

Looking after a baby can certainly be difficult, and there are a few things that you are going to want to watch out for when it comes to feeding them. Babies have never tasted food before and so you never know what, if any, food allergies they are going to have. This is why doctors suggest that in case there are baby food allergies, you start off by only feeding your baby one food for a week at a time, and then change it.

This way there will be enough time in between different foods to tell how your baby reacts to it. Then, if you notice that your baby ever breaks out in hives or a rash after eating a certain type of food, you will have to get their doctor to perform a food allergy test to determine whether in fact they do have an allergy.

Even if this food allergy test does end up coming back positive, bear in mind that this is not to say that they will have this same food allergy for the rest of their life. In fact, they may get to be just a few months old and will not have the food allergy anymore.

About the Test

There are a few things that you will want to be aware of when it comes to the food allergy test. All they do is prick the childs hand a couple of times and then take some tests and from this they are able to determine whether or not the baby has allergies and if so, which specific foods they are allergic to.

Remember that food allergies are common and so you should not be alarmed if it turns out that your baby does in fact have food allergies. They are actually becoming even more popular as time goes on, and you may find that your child is allergic to more than one type of food. Just make sure that you get the food allergy test so that you know exactly what they are allergic to and avoid giving them those foods for the time being.

Doctors usually say that after about a month or two you can try them with the food again, and see how they react. If the same thing happens, you will again want to avoid feeding them that food for about six weeks, and then try again.

The food allergy test is very effective and helpful and even if your child does not react to any foods you may want to have them take the test.
