Treatments for Skin Allergies

There is more to allergies than just nasal congestion and watery eyes. Sometimes allergic reactions can occur when allergens come in contact with the skin. The three main skin conditions associated with allergies are contact dermatitis, hives and eczema. In this article, we will look at treatments for each skin allergy condition in turn.

Skin Allergy Treatments for Contact Dermatitis

Contact dermatitis refers to redness, blisters and scaling caused when the skin comes into direct contact with an allergen. Common causes of contact dermatitis include shampoo, soap, cosmetics and jewelry. The first step in treating contact dermatitis is to switch to hypoallergenic versions of these substances. Dermatologists recommend CeraVe cleansing lotion and moisturizer, for example, as these contain prescription strength ingredients to help protect your skin whilst avoiding allergic reactions. CeraVe products are available from major pharmacies such as CVS and Walgreens.

If this is not enough, secondary treatments are available to relieve the symptoms of contact dermatitis. Antihistamines like Benadryl can alleviate the itching associated with an allergic reaction while steroids, administered either oral or topically, can reduce redness or swelling. However, some people have been known to develop allergic reactions to these skin allergy treatments, so be sure to consult your dermatologist before using them.

Skin Allergy Treatments for Hives

Hives are the common name for urticaria, circular welts that occur in batches on the skin and that can sometimes become itchy. They are usually caused by allergic reactions to food or medications, though sometimes they can be triggered by insect bites. Usually, they are no more than a nuisance, but occasionally they can be life-threatening. In such cases, an injection of epinephrine is used as an emergency treatment.

In minor cases, antihistamines are usually enough to treat hives. It is also important to wear loose clothing so as not to put pressure on the skin; not drink alcohol, which causes "flushing" and can irritate the hives; and to avoid scratching the hives. This last remedy is easier said than done, but scratching them can cause the irritation to spread across a wider area.

Skin Allergy Treatments for Eczema

Eczema is a condition characterized by redness of the skin and itching. It is most common in childhood. Treatment options are similar to those for contact dermatitis, except that diet can sometimes play a factor. For example, eczema often occurs when a baby switches from breast milk to cows' milk, so doctors sometimes recommend switching to soy milk instead, which is less allergenic.
