Taking An Over The Counter Allergy Medicine

When it comes to allergies most doctors will suggest that you try an over the counter allergy medicine first before prescribing you anything. This is because it is always a good idea to start with medicine that is not too strong in order to see what will work for you. Keeping the strength of medicines in your system to the lowest amount necessary is the goal. No one wants their patients taking more medicine then they have to. But if over time the over the counter allergy medicines do not work out for you then they will go ahead and give you a prescription allergy medicine.

Even though the over the counter allergy medicine is something that you can pick up and start all on your own, it is a good idea to make sure that your doctor knows what you are taking. This is especially important for people who take allergy medicines on a regular basis whether they are prescribed or over the counter. The last thing anyone would want is a reaction that could be harmful or even fatal. So before beginning an over the counter allergy medicine make sure that you have a talk with your doctor to find out what he or she believes would be the best for you.

Changing Medicines

Since there are currently a couple different choices to look over when it comes to the over the counter allergy medicine, it is important to make sure that you taking the best thing. If you started with one medicine that your doctor suggested and that is not working well for you, make sure that you speak with your doctor before switching to another over the counter allergy medicine. Just as you did the first time around, you have to make sure that there is no high risk for fatal complications. You also want to make sure that you are allowed to just stop one over the counter allergy medicine one day and start a new one the next.

It may take a couple times switching your medications but as long as you are following the orders of your doctor you will eventually find something that works great for you. Hopefully that medicine will be an over the counter allergy medicine since it will be much cheaper in the long run, especially if you do not have the best prescription plan through your medical insurance. Now that you have allergies, this may be the time to look into additional or at least better prescription coverage.
