Choices For Pet Allergy Medication

Pet allergy is a condition that a person who is sensitive to pet dander experiences. It is not only pet dander that the individual may be sensitive to but also the saliva, urine and droppings of some pets. There are several pet allergy medication formulae that are available in the market and some of this does not even need to be prescribed by a doctor since they can be bought over the counter. Pet allergy medication can not cure allergies, since allergies are not curable, but the pet allergy medication does manage and control the symptoms and reactions that occur when one is exposed to allergens.

Antihistamine

Antihistamine is probably the most commonly prescribed pet allergy medication. This drug is also used to control other forms of allergic reactions in people and has been found to be quite effective in controlling allergic reactions and symptoms of the upper respiratory system. As a pet allergy medication, antihistamine may need to be taken several times a day depending on the label instructions or the prescription of the doctor. This very basic form of anti allergy medication can also be used for other allergic reactions.

Corticosteroids

Corticosteroids are also another popular pet allergy medication. These usually come in the form of nasal sprays to immediately reach the nasal passages and reduce the inflammation in little time but they also come in tablet form for those who can not stand nasal sprays. These pet allergy medications are not similar to steroids that are ingested and are not dangerous as long as the dosage in the labeling is followed. There may be some limit to how many times a day this medication is to be ingested or sprayed into the nasal passages.

Decongestants

These type of pet allergy medication is not an anti allergy medication. It is specifically focused on reducing the swelling of the nasal passageways to help decongest them and encourage easier breathing. These pet allergy relief medications are not to be used for more than three times a day or depending on the doctor's prescription and should not exceed a week's worth of use. Serious side effects of this pet allergy medication include accelerated heart rate and even more congestion if the drug is not taken according to the labeling or prescription.

As with all kinds of drugs and medications, caution must be exercised with the use of any pet allergy medication. Despite these pet allergy medications being available over the counter, it is best to consult a doctor before taking them.
